About this Item
Cape Neo-Classical stinkwood side chair, early 19th century
97,5cm high
Notes
The characteristic feature of split-splat chairs is a fretted back splat. The interesting decorative carving on the upper back rail as well as the caned seat on this chair, indicate that this is a patrician or town example of this Cape neo-classical chair.
Literature
Michael Baraitser and Anton Oberholzer (1987) Town Furniture of the Cape, Cape Town: Struik. A similar example of stylized carving illustrated on page 177, number 728 and 729.
