Young Guns | For the classicists and the geeks alike, an incredible collection
About the Session

What is a Young Gun?

A talented winemaker who pushes the boundaries, breaks the rules and creates cutting-edge wines with personality and energy. Young Guns either work, or have worked for notable estates, but also produce unique wines under their own labels. They are dynamic, working together in pushing the envelope and promoting brand SA. They are the winemakers who should be on your radar as they are making some of the most daring, innovative, and simply delicious wines in SA. They travel and taste extensively, drawing inspiration from the classics through to the more edgy, hip styles and techniques, from the profound and obscure wine regions of the world. And then they apply their own creative interpretations on home soil, often searching for unique vineyard sites, cultivars and old vines. The results are most often small in numbers and high in demand, selling out on release. They are the rising stars, the future icons and ultimately, tomorrow’s investment wines.

About this Item

2017 Rocking Horse
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

Thorne & Daughters Wines was started in 2012 by John and Tasha Seccombe with the aim to produce authentic wines in the beautiful Western Cape. John works with grapes from all over the Cape and seems to have a particularly refined aesthetic when it comes to winemaking. His Thorne and Daughters family concern is truly pushing the boundaries with old vines and simple, natural winemaking.

Rocking Horse is a cornerstone wine and takes its name from a wooden rocking horse that they made for their daughters out of old oak barrel staves. This is Thorne & Daughters signature wine and it is where all their work comes together to make their most complete wine.

Winemakers personal tasting note:
'The wine is composed from a number of carefully selected vineyard sites in the Western Cape. The aromas are of lime leaf, white peach, exotic woods, and sweet dried herbs. In the mouth, the wine starts broad and rich, resolving into a keen line of acidity supported by a gentle tannin with flavours of burnt sugar, orange flowers and rooibos leaf.' - John Seccombe

Critics Ratings

Tweaked each year: Roussanne, Chenin, Semillon, Chardonnay and Clairette in magical 2017. No primary fruitiness, but great aromatic and flavour depth and incipient complexity. More vinous and rich than other whites (13.7% alcohol), with a brilliantly poised acidity.’ – Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2019, 5* (96 pts)

‘”As big as 2015, but more refined,” is how John Seccombe describes the 2017 vintage of this five-way blend of Roussanne, Chenin, Semillon, Chardonnay and Clairette Blanche. Seamlessly complex, with tangerine, citrus and considerable underlying depth. 2019-25.’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2018, 96/100

‘A seductive, medium-bodied white, with a corduroy texture, showing smoothness but also an intense salty streak and firm acidity. Lemon oil, yellow apple, thyme and vanilla flavors create an alluring mix, while minerally details impart lift and range. Roussanne, Chenin Blanc, Sémillon, Clairette Blanche and Chardonnay. Drink now through 2027.’ – Wine Spectator, 92/100 (Oct 2019)
