Young Guns | For the classicists and the geeks alike, an incredible collection
About the Session

What is a Young Gun?

A talented winemaker who pushes the boundaries, breaks the rules and creates cutting-edge wines with personality and energy. Young Guns either work, or have worked for notable estates, but also produce unique wines under their own labels. They are dynamic, working together in pushing the envelope and promoting brand SA. They are the winemakers who should be on your radar as they are making some of the most daring, innovative, and simply delicious wines in SA. They travel and taste extensively, drawing inspiration from the classics through to the more edgy, hip styles and techniques, from the profound and obscure wine regions of the world. And then they apply their own creative interpretations on home soil, often searching for unique vineyard sites, cultivars and old vines. The results are most often small in numbers and high in demand, selling out on release. They are the rising stars, the future icons and ultimately, tomorrow’s investment wines.

About this Item

Girl Next Door, 2018 - 2020
6 (3 x 2) 750ml

Duncan Savage, a trailblazing winemaker, produces some of SA’s most sought-after wines. They are something of a contradiction; ‘savage’ in their essence of minimal intervention winemaking, but utterly sophisticated in their elegance, drinkability and poise. Every year his following grows, with some of these wines reaching a cult-like status. He sources grapes from across the Western Cape winelands and his cellars are based in Salt River.

Made in miniscule quantities from a salty, windswept and battered 0.38 hectare Syrah vineyard near Fish Hoek in Cape Town.

Critics Ratings

2018
'Striking cool-climate Syrah ex Cape Peninsula. 2018 vivid youthful hue, heady spice and red fruit scents with energy and freshness. Concentration of flavour rather than high alcohol give sense of body. Bone-dry, still bit edgy but will round with even short ageing. 13% alcohol.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2020, 4.5* (94 pts)

'Labelled as a Cape Town red, but sourced from a 0.38-hectare parcel close to Duncan Savage's home on the Cape Peninsula, this is a stylish, small volume Syrah on sand, clay and ferricrete soils. With white pepper and sea breeze aromas, lots of colour and intense red berry and blackberry fruit this partially whole bunch fermented red is delicious. 2021-28.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 94/100

2019
'More stately than Red version, 2019 Syrah majestically structured. Cool Cape Peninsula source evident in precision, freshness of dark berry, meaty flavours, deepened in supple richness to long savoury tail. Fine tannin embrace. Like 2018 (4.5 stars, 94 pts), for ageing, but already tempts.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2021, 5* (97 pts)

'This tiny, unirrigated vineyard of only 0.38 hectares, located close to Duncan Savage's home in the Cape Peninsula, is a wonderfully refreshing, peppery expression of the grape that manages to be both concentrated and refreshing. Savoury, aromatic and grippy with notes of lavender and red cherry fruit and a very long finish. 2022-29.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 96/100

2020
'The 3 Syrahs make a nice comparison, different areas, 2020 cooler than others, influencing structure and styling. Rhône-like pepperiness, piquant dark berries, a fynbos nuance, sleek, muscle tone for cellaring but hard to resist now. Lovely polish and precision. WO Cape Town.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2022, 5* (96 pts)

'The quantities are small at just 2,156 bottles, but this tiny maritime parcel of Syrah has done it again, producing one of the most intense iterations of the variety in the Cape. Saline, peppery and subtly oaked with pithy acidity, stony intensity and a freshness and palate length that are all its own. 2023-30.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2021, 96/100
