Young Guns | For the classicists and the geeks alike, an incredible collection
About the SessionWhat is a Young Gun?
A talented winemaker who pushes the boundaries, breaks the rules and creates cutting-edge wines with personality and energy. Young Guns either work, or have worked for notable estates, but also produce unique wines under their own labels. They are dynamic, working together in pushing the envelope and promoting brand SA. They are the winemakers who should be on your radar as they are making some of the most daring, innovative, and simply delicious wines in SA. They travel and taste extensively, drawing inspiration from the classics through to the more edgy, hip styles and techniques, from the profound and obscure wine regions of the world. And then they apply their own creative interpretations on home soil, often searching for unique vineyard sites, cultivars and old vines. The results are most often small in numbers and high in demand, selling out on release. They are the rising stars, the future icons and ultimately, tomorrow’s investment wines.

About this Item
When one considers the long list of acclaim and reputation built from releasing top quality wines, vintage after vintage, from their restored 220 year old cellar on Paardebosch farm on the slopes of the Paardeberg in the Swartland, it's hard to imagine that David & Nadia Sadie established this brand as recent as 2010 only. The wines are characteristically fine and elegant, expressive of the places they come from. The focus lies on a spectrum of organic, old and dry land bush vine vineyards from different areas with different soil types throughout the Swartland, farmed by like-minded people. Considered one of the 'young guns' during the fine wine revolution of the Swartland, David's wines are now considered among the best in the region and beyond.
David & Nadia is a family owned Swartland Winery who have quickly become one of the best white wine producers in South Africa. Made from fifty-year-old vines, in minute quantities in the Western Swartland, it carries the Certified Heritage Vineyards seal. Hoë-Steen’s unique character, purity and presence has seen it gain critical acclaim across the world.

2015
'Overall White Wine of the Year 2016 - There’s only one barrel of this, alas, because it’s the greatest South African Chenin Blanc I’ve ever tasted. Grown on granite, quartz and ferricrete soils, this comes from a 50-year-old vineyard in the western part of the Swartland. Stone, jasmine and hawthorn aromas segue into a remarkable array of favours: wet wool, lees, beeswax, struck match, vanilla spice and minerality. Truly one of the great Cape whites. Can David Sadie do it again next year? Drink: 2016-24.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2016, 98/100
‘Off 50 year old bushvines with unusually tall shoots, hence ‘High Chenin’, this typically richer than single-vineyard sibling. 2015 as refined as 2014 (96 pts), similar restrained pear and wet wool aromas, intense bruised apple flavours with harmonious length, extraordinary presence.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2017, 5*
2016
'There’s still only one barrel of this world-class Chenin Blanc, alas, so join the queue to buy some. Sourced from granite and koffieklip soils, it has an amazing combination of freshness and depth, frivolity and seriousness. Focused, rich and spicy with pear and pastry flavours underpinned by minerality. 2018-24.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2017, 97/100
'Deep clay soils on a granite base. One 400-litre barrel made. Firm and obviously very structured. Extremely complex. Clean, majestic and racy. Bone dry and transparent. Great wine.' - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Aug 2018)
2017
‘Ex 50 year old bushvines with roots in clay and unusually tall shoots, hence ‘High Chenin’, this typically more powerful than Skaliekop sibling. Refined 2017 customary pear and wet wool aromas, intense bruised apple flavours, with harmonious length and an extraordinary presence.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2019, 5* (96 pts)
'Fans of this wine - and I’m in the front row every time - will be delighted to hear that production has risen to five barrels in 2017. Planted in 1968, this two-hectare vineyard is a thing of wonder. Musk, nutmeg and herbal, green apple flavours, incredible intensity and length and an undertone of old wood. One of the Cape’s greatest whites. 2020-30.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2018, 98/100
2018
'This stunning, world class Chenin Blanc comes from deep clay and iron soils. It's a lateripening site planted in 1968 and often the last to be picked at the winery. Rich, concentrated and very fresh, with stony, flinty aromas, subtle aromatic spices, pastry and pear flavours and the faintest whisper of oak. 2021-28.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 97/100
'This south-facing 2-ha (5-acre) vineyard ripens late and was their last vineyard to be harvested in 2018 (even after Cinsault), about a week later than usual in the second half of February. Smaller canopies due to the lack of rainfall for three consecutive winters. Hand sorted, whole-bunch pressed, one year in old French oak barrels. A Certified Heritage Vineyards wine. The yield was 3 t/ha in 2017 but <2 t/ha in 2018. I asked whether he adjusted pricing to take account of this? ‘We’re not Burgundy, so no,’ said David. 2,000 bottles produced. Creamy texture. Racy and lifted. Very dancing and fine. Real impact on the palate. Lightly chewy finish. Very long.' - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Jul 2019)
2019
‘Scant yield off heritage vineyard given the natural treatment, bunch pressed and matured 11 months in neutral French oak provides thrilling, vital yet vibrant and textured 2019. Pear and stonefruit which is pithy yet suave and so assured.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2021, 5* (95 pts)
'One of a trio of world-class single site Chenin Blancs from David and Nadie Sadie (no relation to Eben, by the way), this hails from a two-hectare vineyard that was planted in 1968 and is often picked late. Completing full malolactic - such is the acidity in the grapes - this is leesy, focused and taut, with some ferrous grip and a textured palate. 2021-29.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 96/100
2020
'Hoë-Steen comes from a 1968 vineyard to the west of Malmesbury on deep red iron and clay-rich soils. Broader and richer than the other single site Chenins from the Sadies, with some ferrous grip, fine oak integration, pear, cream and stone fruit flavours and a taut finish. 2022-30.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2021, 96/100
'Quite a panoply of aromas on the very intense nose. Perhaps the purest expression of Chenin Blanc in the David & Nadia stable. Long and neat. But I can’t help seeing parallels with a fine Puligny-Montrachet, I’m afraid. Very long and sleek, with real refreshment value and ageability.' - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Sept 2021)
