Young Guns | For the classicists and the geeks alike, an incredible collection
About the Session

What is a Young Gun?

A talented winemaker who pushes the boundaries, breaks the rules and creates cutting-edge wines with personality and energy. Young Guns either work, or have worked for notable estates, but also produce unique wines under their own labels. They are dynamic, working together in pushing the envelope and promoting brand SA. They are the winemakers who should be on your radar as they are making some of the most daring, innovative, and simply delicious wines in SA. They travel and taste extensively, drawing inspiration from the classics through to the more edgy, hip styles and techniques, from the profound and obscure wine regions of the world. And then they apply their own creative interpretations on home soil, often searching for unique vineyard sites, cultivars and old vines. The results are most often small in numbers and high in demand, selling out on release. They are the rising stars, the future icons and ultimately, tomorrow’s investment wines.

About this Item

2014 Chenin Blanc
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

When one considers the long list of acclaim and reputation built from releasing top quality wines, vintage after vintage, from their restored 220 year old cellar on Paardebosch farm on the slopes of the Paardeberg in the Swartland, it's hard to imagine that David & Nadia Sadie established this brand as recent as 2010 only. The wines are characteristically fine and elegant, expressive of the places they come from. The focus lies on a spectrum of organic, old and dry land bush vine vineyards from different areas with different soil types throughout the Swartland, farmed by like-minded people. Considered one of the 'young guns' during the fine wine revolution of the Swartland, David's wines are now considered among the best in the region and beyond.

The David & Nadia Chenin Blanc from the Swartland focusses on various Old Vine Vineyards, with plantings ranging from 1968 till 1986. The wine is based on granite from the Paardeberg, blended with shale/schist from the east, more clay rich soils from the north and iron rich soils from the western parts of the Swartland. Dry land farmed bush vines have stood the test of time and it showcases the ultimate reason why Chenin blanc is their main focus in the Swartland.

Winemaker's comments:
‘Oat mealy, lanoline, yellow stonefruit and peach focused. Waxy pinenut-and-needle – nothing shy. Dense, powerful and textured. On the palate – rich and fruit-driven with a still-crisp acidity and salinity length for days.’ – David Sadie, November 2022

Critics Ratings

‘David Sadie employs fruit from six different sources, including his new base at Paardebosch, to make this Chenin. Typically focused and expressive, it’s a combination of leesy breadth and tangy minerality, with stony acidity and very subtle oak. Essence of Swartland Chenin.’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2015, 93/100

‘Oxidatively styled 2014 from Perdeberg vines (oldest planted 1960s). Ethereal apricot, white peach and pear aromas, flavours; like almond-toned 2013 (92 pts), emphatically dry, delicious, with hidden depths and sheathed power.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2016, 4.5*
