About this Item

Semillon, 2009
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

Boekenhoutskloof was established in 1776 and since it’s modern era makeover in 1993 it has been under the guidance of maverick spirit, Marc Kent. Unafraid to experiment with the unconventional, Marc is the chief winemaker and driving force behind the dynamic farm, co-founded by the similarly innovative late Tim Rands.

The Boekenhoutskloof Semillon has been predominantly sourced from one of the oldest vineyards in South Africa, planted in 1902 on alluvial soils with a high loam content. The age-worthy Bordeaux-styled white is one of SA’s most underrated wines.

‘The deep root system and high skin to pulp ratio of these old vineyards produce intensely complex, well-structured wines with an unbelievable ageing potential. It is important for us to respect the character of these unique sites and we follow a similar philosophy in the cellar. The grapes are whole bunch pressed and spontaneous fermentation takes place in classic barrique and concrete eggs. We mature our Semillon for 14 months at low temperatures without adding sulphur to ensure that we inhibit any malolactic activity. This oxidative approach at low temperatures enables us to enhance the textural elements of our old vine Semillon, creating structure in a wine that can certainly stand the test of time’ – Winemaker

Critics Ratings

‘Youthful colour suggests a wine that is 10 years younger, still showing a green tone. The freshness continues in the lively, green-fruited aromas that include Granny Smith, fresh lime and peach kernel. Although the palate is broad and complex, with an added layer from the new oak, the most remarkable characteristic is the mouth-watering verve. This almost has a cool-climate like focus, luminated by an acid spine that will keep going for another decade.’ – Higgo Jacobs 2020, 95/100

‘First impression is French oak, then a creamy, honeyed citrus depth. Amazing concentration. Penetrating and long and rich but not fat. Embryonic.’ – Julia Harding MW, Jancisrobinson.com, 17.5/20 (2012)
