About this Item

Saint Émilion, 2009
1 (1 x 1) 750ml

Château Angélus is a Premier Grand Cru Classé A estate on south-facing slopes in Saint-Émilion, on the right bank of the Gironde in Bordeaux. The château was so named because of the presence of church bells that could be heard chiming from the original plots of vineyards, amplified by the natural amphitheater the hill of Saint-Émilion creates. In 1996, Château Angélus, which had been classified as a Grand Cru Classé in the Saint-Émilion Classification of 1954, was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé. In 2012, the château was promoted once again to the top rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé A.
Hubert de Boüard has increased his marketing campaigns to reintroduce the world to Château Angélus, especially after rising to the heights of Premier Grand Cru Classé A. It has become associated with the James Bond films, a 1982 vintage featuring in Casino Royale and a 2005 in Spectre. In 2016, de Boüard's daughter Stéphanie bought her father's shares in the property, becoming sole owner. Her father remains as a co-director.

Critics Ratings

‘A candidate for perfection with a few more years of bottle age, this great vintage of Angelus has an almost impenetrable black/purple color and a gorgeous nose of incense, graphite, blackberry liqueur, truffles and spring flowers. The wine is full-bodied, with a voluptuous texture a magnificent concentration and purity of fruit, a stunning finish of close to a minute, and wonderfully sweet, velvety tannins that make for a prodigious Angelus that should turn out to be one of the all-time greats ever made at this estate. Drink it over the next 25-50 years.’ - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 99/100 (Aug 2015)

‘Deep, saturated ruby to the rim. Super-ripe, high-toned aromas of kirsch and dark chocolate. Large-scaled, ripe and chocolatey, conveying a distinctly exotic character and an impression of power. Finishes with huge but ripe tannins and a lingering note of mocha. For the first 24 hours in the bottle the vintage dominated the wine's Cabernet Franc character, but eventually blackberry, violet and licorice elements emerged. Built for a long life in bottle.’ - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous.com, 95/100 (Jul 2012)
