A Majolica tureen and cover, late 19th century
the cover moulded with fig leaves surmounted by a handle in the form of a fig, the sides moulded in high relief with fig leaves between stylised bamboo borders against a royal blue ground, mottled iridescent base, hairline crack, chips, 11cm high
Provenance
Formerly the property of Edward Fitzgerald (1809-1883). English poet who translated from Persian into English the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (1048-1131).
Purchased by Lady Ina Oppenheimer from Edward Fitzgerald's house sale and bequeathed to the current owner's father.
