About this Item

Echezeaux, 2009
1 (1 x 1) 750ml

Domaine Emmanuel Rouget is a top producer, based in Flagey-Echézeaux, and owner of one of the most prestigious vineyards in Burgundy.

Emmanuel Rouget is the nephew of the late Henri Jayer, a legendary wine maker from Vosne-Romanée. Emmanuel started working in his uncle’s vineyards in 1976 and learned all the techniques from him. In 1996 Henri Jayer retired and transferred his vineyards to Emmanuel Rouget, but still advised his nephew and was responsible for 50% of the wines bottled under the label of Rouget until 2002.

Critics Ratings

‘The 2009 Echezeaux is rich, dark and beautifully layered. The intensity and depth of the fruit is nicely balanced by the impossibly fine, silky tannins. This sumptuous, textured wine is impressive and totally compelling. The Echezeaux was aged in 100% new oak Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039.’ – Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate, 93-95/100 (May 2011)

‘Palish red. Wild, captivating nose combines redcurrant, mocha, dark chocolate, tobacco and botanical herbs. Dense, sappy and sweet, with excellent depth and strong soil tones to the redcurrant and chocolate flavors. Much more shapely than the village Vosne, and with more stuffing to support its tannins. This has the energy to reward cellaring. Rouget makes this wine from 80-year-old vines in the lieu-dit Les Treux and 65-year-old vines in Les Cruots.’ – Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 92/100 (Mar 2012)

‘A more aromatically complex and slightly riper nose speaks of cassis and black raspberry and is given added breadth with the anise, clove, hoisin and soy sauce nuances. The rich, full-bodied and fleshy middle weight plus flavors are generous yet powerful and I particularly like the focus and overall sense of harmony on the gorgeously long and velvet-textured finale.’ – Allen Meadows, Burghound.com, 92-94/100 (Jan 2011)

Provenance

The Coats Family Cellar is arguably the most prestigious fine wine collection ever offered in South Africa. It contains a deep collection of the worlds finest, most sought-after wines, spanning over 150 years. Collected over many decades, the cellar was imported from Ireland to South Africa via reefer. Each bottle within the Coats Family Cellar was authenticated by Michael Egan in August 2022 and given an ID number for tracking.

Michael Egan is a world-expert in fine and rare wines with more than thirty five years of experience. He was the principal expert for the plaintiff in the two major wine counterfeiting trials in Koch v. Eric Greenberg and United States v. Rudy Kurniawan, both of which occurred in 2013.

Along with Michael Egan, the Strauss & Co Fine Wine team have tasted extensively through the cellar and are confident of the wine storage and hence quality. The entire collection is currently stored at Wine Cellar.
