About this Item

Musigny, 2008
1 (1 x 1) 750ml

Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier was founded in 1863 by Frédéric Mugnier’s great-great-grandfather. In 1985, Frederic – a fifth generation Mugnier – took over, and somehow managed to combine the running of the property with his job as an airline pilot. He now focuses his efforts solely on winemaking. The estate is renowned for its Chambolle-Musigny and is the second largest owner in Musigny.

Producer tasting note: 'Le Musigny shares certain characteristics with its neighbour Les Amoureuses; the elegance of richness without heaviness, and it has a similar palette of aromatic composition, although in the case of the Musigny, the underlying structure is less vibrant, more steady, with exceptional depth and intensity of flavour. The length of the finish on the palate is incomparable.'

Critics Ratings

‘The deepest Mugnier wine. Really quite rich and animal on the nose with a hint of truffle and violet. Heady indeed! There is so much here: a wonderful cocktail of lilies and crisp, morello cherry fruit. This wine already has the most dramatic bouquet, as well as admirable finesse and elegance. More ethereal than de Vogüé’s 2008 Musigny. Like an extremely superior lady of the court.’ – Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 18.5/20 (Nov 2009)

‘The 2008 Musigny is an infant, but it captures the essence of this important red Burgundy vintage to the fullest. There is gorgeous subtlety and nuance to the fruit, along with magnificent aromatics and the most elegant of tannins. The 2008 needs time for the elements to harmonize, but there is no mistaking the profoundness of what is developing in bottle. Today the Musigny shows a little more density and a touch better balance with its tannins than the Bonnes-Mares, but both of Mugnier's grand crus in 2008 are truly grand.’ – Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate, 97/100 (May 2011)

'As one would typically expect, this is even stunningly complex with a gorgeously layered and nuanced nose of an impressive array of spice notes and dazzling pure, ripe and dense red and black pinot fruit aromas that precede the mineral-driven yet silkily textured broad-shouldered flavors that are at once powerful yet elegant before culminating in a mouth coating and hugely long finish. A knock-out by any standard. Drink: 2023+.' - Allen Meadows, Burghound.com, 96/100 (Jan 2011)

'Good deep red. A bit darker on the nose than the Amoureuses, showing outstanding verve to the aromas of black raspberry, white pepper, violet, rose petal and spices. At once velvety and racy on the palate, with great energy and class to the dark fruit, floral and mineral flavors. This electric wine is consistent from start to subtle, rising, palate-saturating finish.' - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 96+/100 (Mar 2011)

‘The nose is quite closed at the moment: well defined but taciturn, then unfolding to reveal wild strawberry, cranberry, a touch of orange rind and some well integrated vanillary oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, wonderful tension and poise, the finish fanning out beautifully with touches of mulberry and boysenberry. Backward and surly, afford this at least a decade in the cellar.’ – Neal Martin, 95/100 (Mar 2011)

It contains a deep collection of the worlds finest, most sought-after wines, spanning over 150 years. Collected over many decades, the cellar was imported from Ireland to South Africa via reefer. Each bottle within the Coats Family Cellar was authenticated by Michael Egan in August 2022 and given an ID number for tracking.

Michael Egan is a world-expert in fine and rare wines with more than thirty five years of experience. He was the principal expert for the plaintiff in the two major wine counterfeiting trials in Koch v. Eric Greenberg and United States v. Rudy Kurniawan, both of which occurred in 2013.

Along with Michael Egan, the Strauss & Co Fine Wine team have tasted extensively through the cellar and are confident of the wine storage and hence quality. The entire collection is currently stored at Wine Cellar.
