About this Item

Corton-Charlemagne, 2015
2 (1 x 2) 750ml

The Rollins, father-and-son, produce consistently lovely burgundies for medium-term drinking, as well as being a great source of long-lived Corton-Charlemagne.

Their vineyards extend to almost 14 ha, all very close to the village of Pernand-Vergelesses where they have their immaculate purpose-built cellars alongside the family home. They have two plots in grand cru Corton-Charlemagne, planted in 1948, making on average about eight barrels per year. The bulk of the vines, both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, are in Pernand-Vergelesses, they have parcels in Aloxe-Corton, Savigny-lès-Beaune and in the Hautes-Côtes in Echevronne. Their 2 ha of Aligoté vines are situated on the Hill of Corton. “We respect daily the balance of nature, to preserve our terroirs and produce wines of exception,” is their mission statement and their efforts certainly translate into the bottle in the form of intense pure fruit flavours.

Critics Ratings

‘The 2015 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has fresh and seemingly early-picked, more malic scents compared to its peers: the cooking apple and flint are, dare I say, almost Chablis-like in style! The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. This taut, linear Corton-Charlemagne offers plenty of energy and intensity and a satisfying saline finish. Very fine.’ – Neal Martin, Vinous, 93/100 (May 2018)

‘More mealy depth on the nose compared with the Pernand Sous Frétille. And lovely fragrance that is almost like blossom, though in a more mineral burgundy mode. Has depth, harmony and freshness but not the concentration I might have expected on a grand cru.’ – Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Jan 2017)

Provenance

The Coats Family Cellar is arguably the most prestigious fine wine collection ever offered in South Africa. It contains a deep collection of the worlds finest, most sought-after wines, spanning over 150 years. Collected over many decades, the cellar was imported from Ireland to South Africa via reefer. Each bottle within the Coats Family Cellar was authenticated by Michael Egan in August 2022 and given an ID number for tracking.

Michael Egan is a world-expert in fine and rare wines with more than thirty five years of experience. He was the principal expert for the plaintiff in the two major wine counterfeiting trials in Koch v. Eric Greenberg and United States v. Rudy Kurniawan, both of which occurred in 2013.

Along with Michael Egan, the Strauss & Co Fine Wine team have tasted extensively through the cellar and are confident of the wine storage and hence quality. The entire collection is currently stored at Wine Cellar.
