About this Item

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains, 2006
3 (1 x 3) 750ml

Domaine Bertrand Ambroise is a family-owned winery located in the village of Premeaux-Prissey in the Burgundy region of France. The domaine was founded in the 18th century and is now run by Bertrand Ambroise, who took over from his father in the 1980s. The estate spans over 21 hectares (52 acres) of vineyards, with holdings in the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune subregions of Burgundy.

Critics Ratings

'Already on the nose of Ambroise's 2006 Nuits St.-Georges Clos Les Vaucrains, one senses that it is less about sweetness of fruit – although black raspberry and cassis have a distillate-like presence – than it is about smoky carnal and mineral elements, accompanied by pungent herbal notes. The meatiness and stoniness of flavors here – when taken together with the wine's viscosity, underlying density, impression of sinewy, slightly chewy tannic structure, and peppery finishing pungency – puts me in mind as much of Hermitage as of Burgundian Pinot. Suggestions of roasted nuts and coffee add further dark, faintly bitter shadings to this formidable, compactly-layered, brooding wine (remarkably similar to its 2005 counterpart) but at the same time an enhanced sense of ripe black fruits informs its long, tactilely gripping finish. Some tasters may find this too overbearing to harbor hope of its achieving elegance, but it is quite an achievement as is, and one I suspect will gain in complexity over the next several years and be worth following for a decade.' - David Schildknecht, Wine Advocate, 93/100 (Dec 2009)

Rich and smoky, this is developing into a deliciously ripe wine. The tannins are already in balance with the plum juice flavors of the fruit, giving sweetness as well as power. Dark, intense, but very accessible’ - Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, 92/100 (Oct 2009)

‘Again sweet with what smells like southern hemisphere ripeness. Fine, dry but not drying. Needs to develop flesh but there is some perfume in the middle.’ - Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (Jan 2008)
