Notes

Zapiro was born in 1958 as Jonathan Shapiro, in Cape Town, South Africa. After completing a Fine Arts degree at the University of Cape Town and completing his two-year conscription to the South African army, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and went on to pursue a media degree at the School of Visual Art in New York. His socio-political commentary through satirical cartoons has been published internationally and locally. He has appeared as the editorial cartoonist for the Sowetan; Cape Argus; Mail & Guardian; Sunday Times and now the Daily Maverick. Zapiro's caricatures also appear in the form of puppets on the satirical television and web show ZANews he helped launch in 2009 alongside producer Thierry Cassuto.
