About this Item

Vin de Paille, 2010
2 (1 x 2) 375ml

Michel’s Chapoutier’s landholding, track record and incredible consistency from entry-level wines through to the single-vineyards is unparalleled in the world of wine. Chapoutier ranked 4th in 2019 amongst the “World's Most Admired Wine Brands“. Chapoutier is one of the oldest names in the Rhone valley. Founded in 1808 by the Calvet family, it was sold to the Chapoutier family in 1855. Today, Michel Chapoutier is the reference-point for the entire Rhône Valley, especially with their single vineyard Sélections Parcellaires. In fact, Robert Parker has praised Chapoutier’s Northern Rhône’s as some of the world finest wines.

Critics Ratings

‘Because of a change in French laws, the 2010 Ermitage Vin de Paille will be the last sweet wine made by Chapoutier. Made from 100% Marsanne, this perfect wine exhibits an incredible perfume of truffles, apricot jam and caramelized tangerines. This noble, surgically precise classic can be drunk now or cellared for over 100 years. It is a remarkable wine, and it’s a shame to see this cuvee discontinued. For the technical minded, this wine has 120 grams of residual sugar.’ – Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 100/100 (Dec 2012)

‘Very intense, with a tightly focused beam of apricot eau-de-vie, quince, green almond, heather honey, orange zest and persimmon notes that are both rich and lacy at the same time. A wine of bewildering range and stunning precision. Drink now through 2050.’ – James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 99/100 (Oct 2013)

‘Successive passes through the vineyard select only the best grapes, with a minimum of 360g/l of residual sugar, which are then dried on straw mats for two months before fermentation and maturation in oak for 24 months. The result is a sweet wine with a final RS of around 105g/l. It has aromas of dried citrus peels, bitter orange, orange flower water and coconut, leading to a very full, sensuous and rounded palate with perfectly judged acidity. There is great vibrancy and impact here - it's so alive, so intense, but incredibly tense with huge length. The oak influence is clear and intense, giving roundness, sweetness and spice. As if dry white Hermitage isn’t intense enough! Drinking Window 2019 - 2045.’ – Matt Walls, Decanter, 98/100 (Jun 2019)
