About this Item
A Chinese blue and white bourdalou, Qing Dynasty, 18th century of compressed elliptical shape painted with a rocky outcrop issuing branches of peonies and highlighted in burnt orange and gilt with sprays of bamboo, the side applied with a loop handle painted with a spray of flowers, hairline crack, 9cm high
Notes
An apocryphal explanation of the origin of the name attributes it to Père Bourdaloue (1632-1704) a Jesuit preacher at the Court of Louis XIV, whose long discourses detained the ladies of the Court so as to necessitate this practical receptacle, however, the earliest known examples are of Dutch delftware made c 1710, after Bourdaloue's death.
