Notes

Pierre Vermeulen was born in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Vermeulen currently lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa. He obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2015 and a Masters in Visual Arts in 2021 from the University of Stellenbosch. Notably, in 2016, Vermeulen’s Untitled Sweat Print 1 was commissioned by the Zeitz Collection – a major six-panel work created for site-specific hanging in Gordon House, London. Vermeulen was selected as a finalist in the Sasol New Signatures Award, both in 2015 and 2016.

In 2021 Vermeulen presented Thoughts think themselves, a solo exhibition as part of his Masters presentation at SMAC Gallery in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Further solo exhibitions include; An Artist Room at SMAC Gallery in Cape Town, South Africa in 2020; Of itself, at SMAC Gallery in Johannesburg, in 2018; Pierre Vermeulen, at SMAC Gallery in Cape Town in 2017; and Sweat Prints, a site-specific installation at the Association for the Visual Arts (AVA) Gallery, in the same year.

Vermeulen has been selected for numerous group exhibitions at established institutions such as Iziko South African National Gallery SMAC Gallery in Cape Town and Stellenbosch University Museum. In 2018, Vermeulen presented a solo booth with SMAC Gallery at Artissima in Turin, Italy. His works have also been included in SMAC Gallery’s group presentations at Artissima; Art Brussels in Brussels, Belgium; and Contemporary Istanbul in Istanbul, Turkey.
