Critics Ratings
‘Vergelegen’s first premium red, launched to wide acclaim with the 1994. Current ‘01 retasted mid-2004, bold (15% alc) and beautiful: mulberry-plum flavours folded with chocolate, clove and cinnamon. Ingratiating tannins; long mint/coffee goodbye. 20 months French oak, 60% new. About 10% Cabernet in most years.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2005, 4.5*
‘Full ruby-red. Sappy, complex aromas of plum, currant, clove, chocolate, earth and smoky oak, with subtle spices. Lush and sweet on entry, then creamy and suave in the middle, with seamless, palate-coating flavors of mulberry, chocolate and spices. Pliant, layered wine, finishing with broad, sweet, fine tannins and terrific lingering sweetness and lift. Only a slight herbaceous character kept me from scoring this even higher.’ - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 90/100 (Mar 2005)
