The Blue Collar Girl series is a performative installation project that takes place in different locations throughout the world. It culminates in a three-piece photographic installation. The project involves the actual placement of the character, The Blue Collar Girl, as both a creative force and a blue-collar worker within a cityscape. The Blue Collar Girl wears a chroma-key blue coat, and a black wig that is styled according to the 1950s. In the last shot of the performative documentation, the blue-collar girl leaves her uplifting and motivating slogan behind in various ways. “Only you can©”, a mark of her existence and also an embodiment of a liberated ethos.
To date The Blue Collar Girl project has taken place in Cape Town (South Africa) 2004, Ghent (Belgium) 2004, Maputo (Mozambique) 2005, Delhi (India) 2005, Durban (South Africa) 2006 and Valais (Switzerland) 2006-7.
