About this Item

Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, 1969
1 (1 x 1) 750ml

Tenuta Biondi Santi is a winery located in Tuscany, Italy, known for producing some of the finest and most prestigious Brunello di Montalcino wines. The winery was established in the late 19th century by Ferruccio Biondi Santi, who is credited with creating the first Brunello di Montalcino wine in 1888. Today, the estate is run by Jacopo Biondi Santi, the fourth generation of the family. Tenuta Biondi Santi is considered a pioneer in the Brunello di Montalcino appellation and is recognized as one of the most iconic and historic wineries in Italy.

'La Storica' is the estate wine library; all the vintages of Biondi-Santi Riserva are scrupulously kept there, benefiting from a long refinement in the bottle and are re-released by the winery directly. Riserva is produced only in outstanding years.

Vineyard notes: "The 1969 Riserva was produced exclusively with estate grown grapes sourced from the oldest vines with over 25 years of age. This wine antecedes the registration of the proprietary BBS11 Sangiovese Grosso clone (Brunello Biondi Santi 11), which bears the name of the family. This clone was formally recognized in 1978."

Critics Ratings

‘Mature and just mid ruby with broad, bricky rim. Almost powerful nose of mulch yet still very reluctant to open up further, but with brooding sweetness. Iron and orange and really full on the nose without showing all of its depth yet, but not that much touched by oxidation! Mouthwatering acidity on the attack melting into the still-quite-closed fruit. Fine grip of powdery tannins. Still backward! Beautiful, elegant, medium palate weight and with just a little muscle of the tannins on the finish. Captivating.’ - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Apr 2015)

‘ Biondi-Santi’s 1969 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva has aged gracefully. Dried flowers, mint, licorice, molasses, anise, brown spices, iron, game and tobacco grace the palate in a delicate, feminine Brunello that impresses for its overall balance and harmony. All the elements come together beautifully in the glass. The 1969 is now fully mature, although is has more than enough texture and Sangiovese acidity to hold on for another 5-10 years, perhaps a bit longer. The 1969 will always be more of a delicate Brunello with haunting, nuanced Sangiovese overtones and tons of personality.’ – Antonio Galloni, Vinous 93/100 (Feb 2015)

Provenance

The Coats Family Cellar is arguably the most prestigious fine wine collection ever offered in South Africa. It contains a deep collection of the worlds finest, most sought-after wines, spanning over 150 years. Collected over many decades, the cellar was imported from Ireland to South Africa via reefer. Each bottle within the Coats Family Cellar was authenticated by Michael Egan in August 2022 and given an ID number for tracking.

Michael Egan is a world-expert in fine and rare wines with more than thirty five years of experience. He was the principal expert for the plaintiff in the two major wine counterfeiting trials in Koch v. Eric Greenberg and United States v. Rudy Kurniawan, both of which occurred in 2013.

Along with Michael Egan, the Strauss & Co Fine Wine team have tasted extensively through the cellar and are confident of the wine storage and hence quality. The entire collection is currently stored at Wine Cellar.
