About this Item
With a history dating back over 300 years, Vergelegen has kept a simple winemaking philosophy this entire time, ‘there must be harmony between the old and the new’. Situated on the Schaapenberg in Somerset West, overlooking False Bay, Anglo America purchased the property in 1987 and have since invested extensively in the estate’s viticulture and historic core. Having produced fine, modern wines for two decades, Vergelegen is one of South Africa’s highest regarded, established producers. Andre Van Rensburg, previously with Stellenzicht, has been at the helm of this oldest of Stellenbosch wine concerns since 1998, with advice from none other than world-renowned oenologist Michel Rolland.
Critics Ratings
'65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Franc. Matured for 16 months in 100% new French oak barrels. Red berries, tobacco, dried herbs and oystershell on the nose while the palate is medium bodied with fresh acidity and fine tannins, the finish long and savoury. Has a lovely coolness about it.' - WineMag.co.za 2012 Vintage report (March 2022), 92/100
2012 rates as one of the very best vintages on record and for Andre van Rensburg (Cellarmaster), as good as 1998 and 2000. The 2012 GVB was selected as the SA Champion Red Blend at the SA Young Wine Show of that year.
'Two Bordeaux-style blends in the top ranges: DNA where cab franc rules, & this 2012, cab sauvignon-led with 3 others. Meticulous attention, long skin maceration, new French barriques, a triumph of fruit/oak harmony. Powerful yet streamlined, an assured future.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2017 , 4.5*
