Critics Ratings
Crystallum Peter Max 2012
‘Instantly appealing, it has a little beetrooty and nicely vegetal quality as well as some truffle and the fine red fruits, hinting at spice and chocolate. The palate has delicious fruit, with dry tannins, that little touch of chocolate and spice is very flattering, but his has such lovely fruit sweetness and balance. Delicious.’ - Tom Cannavan, Wine-page.com, 91/100
‘Pale blackish ruby. Nose is getting there but is a little bit stewed with some beetroot character. Lacks a bit of freshness and precision. But at least it is not heavy nor sweetened up. Very slightly metallic finish.' - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com (Jun 2014)
Crystallum Cuvee Cinema 2014
‘Blousy, youthful fruit perfume with herbal notes and forest floor complexity. Firm structure and elegance retained on the palate, having aged with grace and still showing more potential. Balanced and accessible now, with primary fruit still intact, but will also reward further cellaring.' - Higgo Jacobs (Feb 2022)
'Jaw-dropping perfumed grace on the 2014 from single Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge parcel. Displays a fine combination of richness and delicacy. Pure fruit and silky texture give early charm; structure bodes well for future enjoyment. Natural ferment, as all.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2016, 4.5*
‘The densest and most deeply coloured of Crystallum’s Pinots, this is what Peter-Allan Finlayson refers to as “the big daddy”. With high density planting, 30% whole bunches and super texture, this is a subtly oaked, balanced wine showing the guts and dark fruit of a Pommard.’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2015, 94/100
Keermont Steepside Syrah 2012
‘This single-vineyard bottling from winemaker Alex Starey comes from iron-rich soils at 300 metres of altitude and is made entirely from the 470 clone on a north-facing site. It’s a perfumed, almost hedonistic wine. With overtones of liquorice, wild herbs and subtle oak backed by fine tannins and a long savoury finish. A remarkable Syrah. Drink: 2015-22’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2015, 96/100
‘Deep crimson. Very fresh and young. Angular and muscular.’ - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16+/20 (Sep 2015)
Kleinood Tamboerskloof Syrah 2014
‘Fresh, sappy and focused, with juicy red berry fruit, savoury tannins, understated oak and classic white pepper scents, this enjoyable Syrah contains 2% each of Viognier and Mourvèdre for extra complexity. The Cape meets the northern Rhône. 2018-23’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2017, 91/100
Kleinood Tamboerskloof Syrah 2015
‘This is the best Syrah I’ve had from Kleinood, made in what Gunter Schultz describes as a “bright vintage”. Subtle and elegant, with 4% Mourvèdre for added complexity, it’s youthful and sappy with lots of blackberry sweetness, fine tannins and understated wood. 2019-27’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2018, 94/100
‘Tremendous power coursing through compact, black-cherry fruit and glossy Moroccan-leather tannins. Very spicy, rich and concentrated but great balance of freshness. Mouth-watering finish. The fruit gleams like black-crimson jewels.’ - Tamlyn Currin, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (Dec 2018)
Stark-Conde Three Pines Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
‘A solid, gutsy style that is still a bit chunky, as loam, ganache and espresso accents hold sway over the core of dark plum and steeped black currant fruit. Brambly finish. Should unwind with brief cellaring. Drink now through 2017’ - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 90/100 (Aug 2014)
‘The grapes for this wine come from a single, high altitude block on decomposed granite soils. Smooth tannins, flavours of bramble, blackcurrant and loganberry, bright acidity and well integrated oak contribute to a very polished, crowd-pleasing style. Drink: 2014-21’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2014, 94/100
Thelema Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
‘There's a prominent herbal streak to the nose of this wine, but it's not jarring thanks to the support of rich black cherry and black currant fruit core. The savory herbs, menthol and licorice herbaceousness continue through to the palate, where again it's matched by equally intense dark fruit flavors and a mouthwatering finish. Silky wood-spice accents the long finish. Drink now–2014.’ - Lauren Buzzeo, Wine Enthusiast, 91/100 (Nov 2011)
