A Collector’s Cornucopia: Furniture, Ceramics & Silver at Strauss & Co

Strauss & Co, South Africa’s leading auction house, is delighted to unveil a cornucopia of collectables and period furniture in its forthcoming March 2024 online Decorative Arts sale. The auction, which includes a selection of visiting card cases from the collection of British collector and businessman Richard J Stanes, opens on Monday, 18 March at 8am.

Strauss & Co is pleased to announce details of its forthcoming decorative arts sale in Cape Town, due to be held at the Vineyard Hotel on Monday, 7 October. Presented twice annually in Cape Town, this specialist sale is well known for featuring important single-owner collections. The catalogue for the upcoming spring sale includes art and objets from China, England and Japan drawn from two notable collections: the Andrew Newall Collection and the Estate late Mrs Sonia Lapin.

A stirring Irma Stern portrait of a Watussi woman, painted on Stern’s second trip to the Belgian Congo in 1946, leads Strauss & Co’s impressive offering of historical paintings at its forthcoming spring sale in Cape Town. The widely exhibited painting, which is valued at R9 – 12 million, will go on sale at the Vineyard Hotel, Newlands, on 7 October, along with three portraits by Maggie Laubser and a diverse selection of works by J.H. Pierneef, among them five joyous paintings from a single-owner collection.

The Venice Connection: Strauss & Co auction features more than a dozen artists feted at the Venice Biennale since 1950

CAPE TOWN – The Venice Biennale, an important recurring international art exhibition that this year celebrates its sixtieth edition, has over time become a reliable benchmark for judging artist careers. The catalogue for Strauss & Co’s flagship live auction of modern and contemporary art on Tuesday, 19 March 2024 includes work by more than a dozen artists linked to this prestigious international showcase, among them Irma Stern and Zanele Muholi.
