Sunday Brunch, Walkabout and Art Talk

In 1946, a journalist declared that Irma Stern had produced the “finest she has ever given us.” This lecture delves into that seismic year, when Stern, fresh from her Zanzibar journey and riding a wave of creative energy, produced the arresting portrait, ‘Malay (Black Headdress).’ We will examine the intense studio atmosphere and market frenzy that surrounded its creation, analysing how its bold, expressionist impasto (honed during her formative years studying painting in Weimar and Berlin) was applied to a local Cape Muslim sitter.
