JH Pierneef’s Johannesburg Railway Station Panels: New Angles
Strauss & Co invites you to join Dr Alastair Meredith, Head of the Art Department, for a special talk on JH Pierneef’s Johannesburg Railway Station Panels.
Pierneef’s thirty-two monumental panels were originally conceived to hang high above commuters in the main concourse of Johannesburg Railway Station. In recent years they have been viewed at eye level in gallery settings, offering a strikingly different perspective on the artist’s large-format design principles. Now that the panels are once again installed at their intended height, this is the perfect moment to revisit one of Pierneef’s most iconic commissions.
The talk will not only explore the panels themselves but also examine Pierneef’s stylistic development through the 1910s and 1920s.
Dr Alastair Meredith, auctioneer, Senior Art Specialist and Head of the Art Department at Strauss & Co, is a leading art historian and an acclaimed speaker with a particular expertise in the work of JH Pierneef.
