Archived: Unseen Pierneef Smashes Records at Strauss & Co

The star of the show at Strauss & Co’s winter sale held last night at the Wanderers Club in Johannesburg was undoubtedly JH Pierneef, when a new all-time world record was set by his previously unseen painting, Farm Jonkershoek with Twin Peaks Beyond, Stellenbosch, which shattered its estimate of R6 000 000 – R8 000 000, by fetching a mammoth R20 462 400. This is the second highest price ever achieved for a painting sold at auction in South Africa.

Archived: August Art Month at Welgemeend looks at art from the 1950s to the 70s

Strauss & Co is delighted to announce the fourth installment of the annual August Art Month at Welgemeend, a month-long exhibition of South African art at one of Cape Town’s most renowned manor homes. The theme for this year’s winter exhibition is “Abstraction – South African art from the 50’s to the 70’s” and will showcase work from two important private collections, the Frank and Lizelle Kilbourn Collection and Pieter Colyn Collection.

Kalahari Studio: Honouring the Past, Shaping Legacies

Strauss & Co is proud to present a unique exhibition of the wares from the Kalahari Studio (1948 – 1973) at our Johannesburg premises, 89 Central Street, Houghton Estates from 3 to 28 February 2025. The wares are drawn from the extensive private collection of Tony Fornali. The show also celebrates the publication of the definitive book on the wares produced by the Studio. Written by Fornali, the book will be launched on Tuesday, 4 February 2025.
