About this Item
Notes
Stephané Edith Conradie, a Namibian-born artist now based in Cape Town, South Africa, holds a PhD in Visual Arts and serves as a print-media lecturer and Head of Department at the University of Cape Town. Her work delves into social and economic contexts in South Africa, particularly exploring how people arrange objects in their homes. Conradie creates intricate sculptures inspired by lower and working-class home decor, challenging perceptions of value and identity. She examines the colonial and creolized histories within domestic material culture, shedding light on the complexities of identity formation linked to South Africa's history of colonialism, slavery, segregation, and apartheid. In 2023, she received recognition, including the Humanities Emerging Researcher Award and the Young Artist Award for her work presented in Germany.
