About the Session

The Loire Valley is a large region that follows the longest river of France. The Loire is an exceptional place to find lean, racy, white wines, including those of Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadet. Red varieties include Cabernet Franc, Gamay and Cot (Malbec), which produces herbaceous, rustic reds.

About this Item

Breton, 2017
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

Van Loggerenberg Wines was started by Lukas and wife Roxanne with their first vintage in 2016. The 2020 vintage is the fifth release for Lukas – a rising star, Young Gun and 2018 Young Winemaker of the Year by Tim Atkin. Lukas grew up in Rawsonville in the Breederivier valley, and was always surrounded by vineyards and wine. His wines are produced in the Devon Valley and the grapes are sourced from Stellenbosch, Paarl and Swartland. Each wine and it’s name has a specific story behind it and his wines have become extremely sought-after.

'The name Breton is from the old French name in the Loire for Cabernet Franc. We chose this name as it was in the Loire valley that we made the final decision to start Van Loggerenberg Wines. The silhouette of the woman symbolizes the elegance of Cabernet Franc and is emphasized again by the Percheron horse. This breed is always perceived as a rough brute of a horse but in my view is very elegant and in that way similar to Cabernet Franc to me: firm but with great elegance.

The landmark on the label is in the Bluegum Grove vineyard used in the wine. The stamp shows a Donnie Merino sheep which was first cloned on Elsenburg and is symbolic of my studies there.' Lukas van Loggerenberg

Critics Ratings

‘”I’m a Loire fanatic,” says Lukas van Loggerenberg, referring to the style of this blend from Faure and the Polkadraai Hills. Partially whole bunch fermented, it’s a fine, elegant, nuanced style of Cabernet Franc, with haunting perfume, velvety tannins and a light, graceful finish. 2019-27’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2018, 95/100

‘So perfumed! Beautiful black-olive bitterness. Superb – just so intricate, and with easy drinkability and effortless length. Serious yet super-fun too. Liquid joy!’ – Richard Hemming MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5+/20 (Sep 2018)
