About this Item

Merlot, 1989
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

Meerlust Estate, owned by the Myburgh family, has been in the family for eight generations. Located 5km from False Bay, the property was given the name 'Meerlust' from the original owner, which means 'pleasure of the sea'. The Meerlust name is synonymous with tradition, elegance and longevity. In fact, it was their Cabernet Sauvignon, produced since 1975, that was the first to carry the Meerlust label.

In 1980, after several years of experimentation and visits to Bordeaux, Nico Myburgh and Giorgio Dalla Cia produced the icon Rubicon and one of SA’s first Merlots. The 1989 featured 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and was son Hannes’ first vintage in charge.

Critics Ratings

‘1989’s oak-fruit mélange clear notch ahead of 1988 which has strong, forward bouquet – bit smoky, good plummy fruit backing. Both gold medals at Intervin, North America’s major international wine competition. 1989 only SA wine so honoured. All-new French oak well-toasted for 18 months.’  Platter’s SA Wine Guide 1996, 5*
