A recurring theme in Pierneef's work is the willow tree, referred to by Pierneef as 'wilkers', along the Vaal River and especially along the pools formed by the Pienaars River on the farm Roodeplaat, north of Pretoria - although Pierneef always called it 'Rooiplaat'.

DM Joubert (1990) Preface, in JH Pierneef: His Life and His Works. PG Nel (ed.) Perskor: Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Stephan Welz & Co in Association with Sotheby's, Johannesburg, 4 November 1991, lot 281.
