Notes

‘My love for Robert began when I was his student at Wits. When I was in my honours year, he used to give these wonderful talks looking at various artists and their paintings. I remember being so fired up by his enthusiasm and love for the art-making process, that I would rush back to my studio afterwards full of creative energy, and do my best work. Rob instilled in me a deep understanding of the creative process and a love for the making of art – not just for the finished piece. The friendship (and working relationship) went on until his death, taking great delight in each other’s company – whether talking about art, food, or just being silly and ‘strutting our stuff.’ I always told him that I hoped to still be around to celebrate his 120th birthday with him, and that if he died on me, I’d kill him!’ – Deborah Bell
