About this Item

London, England
A George II silver salver, Dennis Wilks, London, 1741
circular with wavy moulded rim, raised on four hoof feet, 175g
height: 3cm; diameter: 15,5cm

Notes

Dennis Wilks registered his mark in July 1739 and is recorded working into the early 1740s, with salvers specifically among his documented output. Salvers of this kind served a practical purpose at the Georgian table, originally intended to save the carpet or clothes from drops when a drink was presented, and later pressed into service for letters and visiting cards as well, raised on three or four small feet to lift them clear of the table.
