About this Item
Château Haut-Bailly is a historic wine producer located in Pessac-Léognan on the Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated Left Bank in Bordeaux. Half a century ago, the wines frequently commanded the same prices as the first growth wines and, in the 1959 Graves Classification, the château was given Grand Cru Classé status. The estate makes its well-regarded wines from 30 hectares of vineyard on a high, sandy ridge with a large proportion of sandstone. Cabernet Sauvignon makes up the majority of the vineyards, but plantings also include Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Critics Ratings
‘The 2005 Haut-Bailly is unbelievably finessed from start to finish. A wine of unreal class, the 2005 impresses with its silky, mid-weight personality and fantastic balance. The aromatics aren’t fully expressive today, but everything else about the 2005 is absolutely irresistible. Despite its considerable charm, Haut-Bailly comes across as still needing time in bottle to be at its best! In a vintage in which so many wines are extroverted, Haut-Bailly retains an air of elegance and understatement. The best is clearly yet to come.’ - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 96/100 (Apr 2021)
‘Full, deep colour with a touch of brick at the rim. Intense and profound on the nose with dark fruit, spice and liquorice notes. Plenty of substance on the palate, the fruit full, ripe and expressive. Cassis notes again. Big tannic frame but tannins rounded. Firm, dry finish. Exudes balance and harmony and still has a way to go. 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc.’ - James Lawther MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Jul 2020)
‘The 2005 Haut Bailly is rapidly turning into a glorious wine. You instantly fall in love with the purity on the nose, luscious red cherries, wild strawberry and blueberry. This is still youthful and beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a structured opening like many in this vintage. It exerts a gentle grip in the mouth, quite tensile and linear and perhaps just tightening up a tad toward the finish. It is biding its time, but it will repay those who cellar this outstanding 2005 for another four or five years.’ - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 95/100 (Mar 2017)
