About this Item
Château Angélus is a Premier Grand Cru Classé A estate on south-facing slopes in Saint-Émilion, on the right bank of the Gironde in Bordeaux. The château was so named because of the presence of church bells that could be heard chiming from the original plots of vineyards, amplified by the natural amphitheater the hill of Saint-Émilion creates. In 1996, Château Angélus, which had been classified as a Grand Cru Classé in the Saint-Émilion Classification of 1954, was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé. In 2012, the château was promoted once again to the top rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé A.
Hubert de Boüard has increased his marketing campaigns to reintroduce the world to Château Angélus, especially after rising to the heights of Premier Grand Cru Classé A. It has become associated with the James Bond films, a 1982 vintage featuring in Casino Royale and a 2005 in Spectre. In 2016, de Boüard's daughter Stéphanie bought her father's shares in the property, becoming sole owner. Her father remains as a co-director.

Critics Ratings
‘Medium to deep garnet-brick in color, the 1990 Angélus comes barreling out of the glass with big, bold, beautiful aromas of rose oil, cloves, smoked meats and licorice over a core of baked black plums, crème de cassis and raspberry pie plus hints of new leather and tobacco leaf. The palate is a full-on rich, powerful, full-bodied blockbuster, featuring bags of pure red and black fruit preserves layers and an incredible floral undercurrent, supported by plush tannins and lively freshness, finishing with epic length and depth. It's extraordinary to experience right now and yet should easily cellar for another 20+ years.’ - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate, 99/100 (Oct 2020)
‘A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, this is clearly the greatest Angélus until the 2000, 2003 and then the perfect 2005. Beautiful, sweet plum, blackberry and blueberry fruit soar from the glass of this opaque, purple wine that still hasn’t lost much in color. Deep, opulent, voluptuously textured, full-bodied and multidimensional, this is a stunner and just now approaching its plateau of full maturity, where it should stay for at least another 20 years.’ - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 99/100 (Aug 2015)
‘Very deep and with a rich, orange rim but great concentration. Still youthful and a return to Angélus. Silky fresh with lovely sweetness and absolutely lovely now. Pure pleasure. Spice and sweetness and fragrance. Great balance and vibration. What a contrast with 1991! Long and reverberant and great balance. Rich tea-leaf aromas. Very sweet. Long.’ - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 18/20 (Oct 2011)
