Founder members of the Kalahari Studio, Aleksanders Klopcanovs and Elma Vestman manufactured a diverse variety of products. The studio’s enduring legacy lies in its synthesis of indigenous South African forms with modernist design, leaving an indelible mark on the artistic landscape of the mid-20th century.

Klopkanovs, also called Sasha, studied figurative painting and sculpture at the Royal Academy of Arts in Sweden. The confident, uninterrupted line drawings decorating this plate, demonstrate his proficiency in figurative drawing. He would often draw a circle around a particular figure to get a sense of how it would look on a plate.

The Kalahari Studio is renowned for blending local cultural motifs with innovative modernist styles to produce ceramics rich in narrative and meaning. Their legacy lies in the successful fusion of indigenous South African aesthetics with Modernist principles, leaving a lasting impact on mid-20th century ceramic art in South Africa.
