Peter Lane

Contemporary Porcelain: Materials, Techniques and Expressions

Session 1
About the Session

Strauss & Co is pleased to offer a selection of books on ceramic art from the late Peter Jaff’s collection in this sale. Peter Jaff (1947-2025) was a potter and collector of contemporary South African and British ceramics. He was also an avid collector of ceramic books, eager to learn from established potters across the world.

An accountant by profession, in 1979 he was inspired to join ceramics classes with Digby Hoets after encountering the work of Tim Morris and Hyme Rabinowitz.

Jaff worked in porcelain, producing functional and occasionally decorative ware, and established his own studio in 1982. He participated in many regional and national ceramic exhibitions, winning several prizes, including the prize for the best thrown piece at the 1997 Ceramics Now exhibition held in Pretoria.
