Not being, but becoming
About the SessionSixty African artists, one work each. SEED IV, SAFFCA’s exhibition and online-only auction presented in partnership with Strauss & Co, opens for bidding today at 10am. Now in its fourth edition, the sale brings together around 60 works that offer a snapshot of contemporary practice across the region.?
As the name suggests, the sale is about growth. 10% of proceeds is shared between the Centre for the Less Good Idea, the Bag Factory and the META Foundation. A further 30% funds SAFFCA’s residency programmes in South Africa and Brussels, which bring African and European artists together each year. Each work acquired helps sustain the artists and practices still to come.
The purchase price or the hammer price of each work sold will be distributed as follows:
60% will go to support the career of the artist. Where the artist is officially represented by a gallery, the artist receives 50% and the gallery 10% towards its administrative and logistical costs. Independent artists receive the full 60% and are responsible for those tasks themselves.
10% will be donated to three other non-profit organisations of the contemporary art eco-system, 3.33% each: the Bag Factory, the META Foundation and the Centre for the Less Good Idea. These organisations are among the strongest buttresses of the contemporary art world in South Africa at
the level of the art practice.
30% will go to support the various initiatives of SAFFCA, mainly the residency programme of SAFFCA NPC and SAFFCA.EU in South Africa and in Europe.
