Tears on Dust and Mineral Mouths Flora's Resurrection

About the Session

ArtAngels is an annual charity art auction for the benefit of Click Learning, an NGO that uses technology to set learners in no-fee primary schools on track with the foundational literacy, numeracy and digital skills they need to build sustainable livelihoods in the future.  In addition, the auction invests back into the arts through the Blessing Ngobeni Art Prize and the ArtAngels Everard Read Bursary at Ruth Prowse School of Art. This event relies on the generosity of our sponsors, renowned local artists and participants, each of whom support Click Learning’s ultimate vision, the arts and a better future for South Africa. Strauss & Co supports this important initiative by waiving all commissions.

A break will occur between Lots 24 and 25.

Attendance is by invite only.

"The sculpture entails a life-size, mottled, light-hued Southern African Canyon Granite, a hand-carved, high-relief self-portrait with integrated cast plant material, bronze and silver 'Myrothamnus flabellifolius' (called the resurrection plant, native to Namibia and Southern Africa). The self-portrait is reflective of the sequence of catena and my Namibian and South African heritage. It engages the idea of surrendering to place and nature, grasping the relatedness of all layers of the environment (rock, mineral, soil, plant, animal) in its catena — a connected series of related things."

"My tears may water Flora’s roots, my dust may feed her mineral mouth, her rebirth may bring song to the veld, her catena may make Fuanus dance."
