'The Gris' Old Vine Sémillon 2025
About this Item
Wine of Origin: Swartland
Winemaker: Andrea Mullineux
This is far more than a rare wine - it is a living piece of South African viticultural history. Once dominating the vineyards of the Cape, this natural and genetically unique mutation of Sémillon has been whittled down to just a few vineyards. Andrea, along with industry professionals, has been on a mission to put this heritage variety back on the pedestal it deserves to be on. After 14 years of genetic isolation and propagation, Sémillon Gris has now been officially recognized as a variety unique enough to bear its own name on the label. This wine comes from the vineyard planted in 1960 on the granite slopes of the Paardeberg - the very site that made certification possible.
Tasting Notes: While enjoying a bottle of this rare wine, listen to Stand By Me by Ben E. King - a song about steadfastness through uncertainty, echoing the resilience of a vineyard that has endured and remained true to itself through six and a half decades of flux and rediscovery.
