Roy Lichtenstein, born 1923, was an American artist and a leading figure of the Pop Art movement. Born in New York, he studied at Ohio State University, where he later returned to teach. His early work was influenced by Cubism and Abstract Expressionism before he developed the distinctive visual language for which he became renowned in the early 1960s.

Lichtenstein drew inspiration from commercial printing, comic strips, advertisements and popular culture, translating their bold outlines, limited colour palettes and Ben-Day dots into paintings, prints and sculptures. His practice challenged traditional distinctions between fine art and mass culture, while engaging with the history of modern painting.

Throughout his career, Lichtenstein exhibited extensively in the United States and internationally, with major exhibitions at institutions including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. His work is held in prominent public and private collections worldwide and remains highly influential in the history of post-war American art.
