Notes
The present lot comes from the collection of the artist and ceramicist Dee Jacobs, who trained under Bill Ainslie at the Johannesburg Art Foundation in 1984. Working across a range of media, including oil, acrylic, watercolour, gouache, ink and charcoal, Jacobs' practice later turned toward abstract sculptural forms, built up through brush-applied handmade Japanese paper. It was within Ainslie's circle that she formed close relationships with fellow artists, including Durant Sihlali.
It was Sihlali who held the half-day workshop that Jacobs attended, in which the artists created their own paper compositions by hand. Working with wire mesh screens set in wooden frames, they prepared their own sheets from paper pulp, shaping the raw material into the works themselves. Creating similar works to the present lot by Durant Sihlali.
