Sierra Cantabria

Amancio 2007

Spain
About the Session

Rioja anchors the Spanish session with a depth and breadth that rewards both traditionalists and modern-style enthusiasts. La Rioja Alta is the most extensively represented producer, with Gran Reserva 904 spanning multiple vintages and formats, alongside the classic Reservas - Viña Ardanza, Viña Alberdi, and Viña Arana. Beyond Rioja, Sierra Cantabria delivers some of the most sought-after names in the sale. Their single-vineyard Amancio across 2002 and 2007, the Finca El Bosque, and the Colección Privada 2003 represent the very top of the Rioja hierarchy.

About this Item

Amancio 2007
1 (1 x 1) 750ml
Bodegas Sierra Cantabria was founded in 1957 by Guillermo Eguren in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, building on a family viticultural tradition stretching back to 1870; Marcos Eguren, named Winemaker of the Year by Tim Atkin MW in his 2023 Rioja Special Report, leads the winemaking today. Amancio is the estate's Grand Cru expression, sourced from the La Veguilla vineyard at 490 metres elevation in San Vicente and named in honour of Amancio Eguren, the first member of the family to cultivate vines in the Sonsierra in 1870. The 2007 vintage was a warm and generous year in Rioja producing concentrated, well-structured wines. Jancis Robinson MW gave it 17 out of 20.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@briceandburnett.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“Named after the first member of the talented Eguren family of Rioja Alavesa to grow grapes, in 1870. The wine comes from the 15 ha La Veguilla vineyard at 575m elevation in the San Vicente region. Close-spaced, low-yielding vines with rigorous selection. Aged in French oak and given modern Bordeaux elevage. Very concentrated nose of black fruits with smudgy tannins in retreat but good beginning, middle and (long) end.” - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Dec 2017)

“This powerful red is a blunt instrument now, displaying solid tannins and a thick texture, but there's a deep core of currant and fig, with mineral, sanguine and licorice notes, and this should bloom with time.” - Thomas Matthews, Wine Spectator, 91/100 (Dec 2010)
