About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Brunello di Montalcino Vigneto Manachiara 2006
5 (1 x 5) 750ml
Tenute Silvio Nardi is one of Montalcino's larger historic estates, established in Casale del Bosco in the northern part of the appellation when Silvio Nardi acquired the land in 1950; the Vigneto Manachiara is the estate's single-vineyard Brunello from its most distinguished parcel, produced in limited quantities and aged longer than the regular release. The 2006 Brunello vintage was a warm and powerful year of considerable concentration and structure. Walter Speller from JancisRobinson.com gave it 16.5 out of 20, Bruce Sanderson from Wine Spectator gave it a rating of 92, and Stephen Tanzer from Vinous gave it a rating of 93+.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

Critics Ratings

“Concentrated but already maturing ruby with orange highlights. Sweet and concentrated and still very compact. Rich, sweet finish. There is quite a lot of everything here, including acidity. Modern style, huge amount of extract.” - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (Sep 2011)

“Supple for the vintage, boasting rich cherry and plum flavors accented by tobacco and spice. The tannins are dense, lingering nicely on the finish. The mineral and underbrush notes persist in the end.” - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 92/100 (Feb 2013)

“Good full medium red. Aromas of plum, redcurrant, coffee, mocha and oak. Broad, silky, sweet and seamless, but today a strong spine of acidity gives it a rather backward impression. Not yet as sweet or delineated as the normale, but this wine's tight bitter cherry and redcurrant fruit and rather clenched tannic backbone suggest that it will eventually surpass the regular release.” - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 93+/100 (Jul 2011)
