About this Item

Rubicon 1984
2 (1 x 2) 1500ml
In 1980 after several years of experimentation, Nico Myburgh with fellow winemaker Giorgio Dalla Cia, their iconic Rubicon blend was born and it was unlike anything South Africa had seen before. The introduction was a Rubicon moment for South African fine wine market. One of SA's most recognised blends, The name 'Rubicon' is from ancient Roman days as the crucial border of the ancient capital was named the Rubicon River. When the border was crossed it was deemed as an irrevocable point in history, much like the introduction of Rubicon to the South African fine wine market. Meerlust is committed to ensuring that Rubicon becomes even more distinguished and continues to occupy its rightful place amongst the finest wines in the world.

The 1984 is one of the finest and increasingly rare vintages of South Africa's most famous red wine.

This wine has been checked and re-corked by Amorim, under the protection of an argon gas blanket, with each opened bottle being topped up with reserve wine from the same vintage, recorked, and resealed. This was done under the supervision of a technical team from Amorim Corks and Strauss & Co Fine wine Specialists Higgo Jacobs and Roland Peens, assuring provenance, quality and long life. The Seal code on the neck of the bottle can be traced on Amorim Recorking Directory

Critics Ratings

"Lovely sweetness on the ’84 that has impressive generosity of fruit and fuller weight than the straight Cabernets. Deep black fruit, black forest cake, ganache and mint liqueur. Classy and youthful, especially from magnum.” – Higgo Jacobs, 95/100 (March 2026 – Tasted at recorking.)

'In an increasingly crowded field of local excellence, this remains among the top South African claret blends; consistently elegant, medium-bodied, carefully oaked, restrained but perfumed, with some classic, minerally, claret undertones. A ripe vegetal/herbal nuance is often apparent, with dried tea leaf associations. A medium-length finish, in a routinely medium-strength wine. The '84, undoubtedly one of the best vintages, was, for well-known French shipper Paul Bouchard, "the finest French claret outside France". Meerlust Rubicons are not big, plummy over-oaked or over-done New World or Californian creations. The aim has been not so much to attack the nostrils, with an upfront bouquet of raw cedary oak, but to go for elegant complexity on the palate.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 1990, 5*
