The Distinguished Cellar of David Brice: A Rhône Collection
About the Session

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Wine Cellar, fine wine merchants. His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Wine Cellar thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

The Rhône valley was one of David’s favoured regions, known for its diverse range of reds and whites. These were quintessential French wines from excellent easy-drinking, to fine, long-term treasures. He enjoyed wines from all the villages from Vaucluse to Vacqueyras, and Cornas to Côte-Rôtie. David focused on top vintages for long-term maturation and lesser vintages for earlier drinking. The highlight perhaps is his deep collection of top Châteauneuf-du-Pape from great vintages like 2010 and 2007.

About this Item

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Barbe Rac 2006
1 (1 x 1) 750ml
A powerful, single‑vineyard expression of 100 % Grenache from a historic parcel within the western corridor of the Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape appellation, planted on ancient, biodynamically farmed vines with complex soils of rolled pebbles and limestone. The name Barbe Rac comes from the specific vineyard site and reflects Chapoutier’s focus on site‑specific terroir expression.

Critics Ratings

‘The deep ruby/purple-tinged 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac reveals a rich, sumptuous perfume of root vegetables, blackberries, cassis, melted licorice, incense, and spice. Chapoutier’s single vineyard Chateauneuf du Papes represent two different areas of the appellation, with the Barbe Rac coming from the western corridor, not far from the Plateau of Mont-Redon. Chapoutier has adjusted the manner in which he ages these cuvees, as they are now completely aged in tank. It is incredibly full-bodied for a 2006, with superb concentration as well as excellent length and purity. Drink this beauty over the next 15+ years. Both the Barbe Rac and Croix de Bois are 100% Grenache.’ - Robert M. Parker, Jr., Wine Advocate, 94/100 (Oct 2008)

‘A very beguiling, stylish, perfumy style, with incense, tea, sandalwood, red cherry and red currant fruit allied to a fine-grained texture. Supersilky and extremely long, with a lingering mineral- and shiso leaf-tinged finish that won't quit.’ - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 94/100 (Jun 2009)

'Based in the northern Rhône, Chapoutier's Châteauneufs have not always been a strong suit, but the 2006 Barbe Rac rocks. Some stable-like notes on the nose add complexity to the bold cherry fruit, while stemmy, herbal notes bring even more nuance to the palate. It's full bodied, soft and round, with a finishing texture somewhere between silk and velvet.’ - Joe Czerwinski, Wine Enthusiast, 93/100 (Dec 2009)
