Notes
"The work of Hermans, who completed a masters degree at the University of Cape Town in 1991, is nourished by his fascination with the physical and emotional 'furniture' of private spaces. In this work the easy association with cozy afternoon teas, and the sublimely tranquil paintings of the Impressionist artists, is subverted in a scene of elaborately cluttered domestic bliss. A shattering array of broad and frenetic brush marks and raw colour destabilizes a reading of the subject matter, infusing it with a vibrant, even violent emotional intensity suggestive of the presence of powerful passions underlying the ordinary and the everyday."1
