About this Item
Notes
Like most personal yet utilitarian objects in Southern Africa, snuff spoons were carved with a refinement and balance that gave them a presence beyond their functionality and size. The cross-hatching and delicately incised design, rubbed with soot or contrasting colour, adds a fine decorative element. These spoons were used to scoop small amounts of snuff from a container for inhalation. They were often carried tucked into the hair, worn on a thong around the neck, or attached to a snuff container — serving both practical and decorative roles.
Provenance
Colin Sayers Collection.
