About this Item
South African 1948-1973
Organic-shaped ashtray with abstract design
signed 'KALAHARI' on the underside
glazed and painted ceramic
height: 22cm; width: 16cm; depth: 4,5cm
Notes
Elma Vestman and Aleksanders Klopcanovs, the founders of the Kalahari Studio, were responsible for introducing contemporary international Modernism to South African ceramics and revolutionising local ceramic design.
The biomorphic shape of this ashtray with its strong organic, sculptural form references mid-century Scandinavian ceramic Modernism.
