Notes
“In scrutinising Esias Bosch’s work, one becomes acutely aware of the major significance of his move to the Lowveld in 1980. He has often admitted to the influence of the scenic beauty of this part of the country, its fauna and flora, its tranquillity: ‘I am surrounded by animals and plants, and simply use what is around me all day…I never make specific preliminary drawings but work straight on the tile or the pot.’ A distinctive feature of his large tiles with their imagery from nature is the gold lustre he used, which gives these works a Byzantine-like opulence. ‘I have worked for almost 30 years with ordinary-coloured glazes. However, there is something magical about working with lustres. It has something to do with the world of fairies – it has more poetry and more music in it for me.”
