Notes
Although Andrew Verster labelled himself simply as a painter, he was a successful fine artist who also made a significant impact on costume and set design. In the early 2000s, he worked on a number of South African stage productions, including Faust, Princess Magogo, La Traviata, Rigoletto, The Coolie Odyssey, and Threnody and Dances for the Women’s Festival in 2002. He also created costumes for Private Lives at the Hilton Festival, the adult pantomime Sinderella, The Rocky Horror Show (2004), and Grease (2006) at the Barnyard Theatre. His work was recognised with multiple Fools Awards (2003, 2005, 2006, 2007) and the Durban Theatre Award for Best Costume Design in 2004. Beyond his creative practice, Verster served on various boards including the Durban Art Gallery, the African Art Centre, and the Grahamstown Festival Committee.1
