About this Item

1985 Rouge
6 (1 x 6) 750ml
The 1985 Rouge was legendary Gerhard 'Hempies' du Toit's third vintage, after taking over the reins from his father in the newly built estate cellar. Few wineries can lay claim to levels of trust in quality and ageability as Alto reds.

This wine has been checked and re-corked by Amorim, under the protection of an argon gas blanket, with each opened bottle being topped up with reserve wine from the same vintage, recorked, and resealed. This was done under the supervision of a technical team from Amorim Corks and Strauss & Co Fine wine Specialists Higgo Jacobs and Roland Peens, assuring provenance, quality and long life. The Seal code on the neck of the bottle can be traced on Amorim Recorking Directory

Critics Ratings

'The 1985 is more savoury than the lighter 1984. It still shows floral notes, an elegance and freshness. Red fruits, forest floor and good depth considering the easy tannins. Drink it now, it seems to be on a good plateau!' - Roland Peens 97/100, (July 2025)

'Change in blend, now Cabernet Sauvignon, Franc and Merlot with some Shiraz. Slightly lighter style than unblended Cabernet Sauvignon. Some sweetish hints of mulberries on palate, with attractive cedary introduction in the bouquet. Formerly blend of Cabernet with Shiraz and some Tinta Barocca.' – Platter's SA Wine Guide 1989
